Snow Leopard <3 Web Developers

Snow Leopard

After some digging, it appears that Snow Leopard (Apple’s latest OS X release) includes quite the refresh of web development stacks.

One update that is particularly exciting is the inclusion of PHP 5.3 which is fantastic for PHP developers as this release marks a major milestone in the progression of the language. It will be particularly useful for Bedrock developers using the OS as a development environment (wink wink). Just for fun, here’s a quick list of what versions are included:

  • Apache 2.2.11
  • Java 1.6.0_15
  • Perl 5.10.0
  • PHP 5.3
  • Python 2.6.1
  • Rails 2.2.2
  • Ruby 1.8.7
  • RubyGems 1.3.1
  • SQLite 3.6.12
  • Subversion 1.6.2

If you see anything missing, feel free to mention it in the comments. Also note the above list is for the desktop version of the OS. If anyone is already running the server version, I’d love to hear what else related to web development has been added/updated.

  2. [...] in case you were wondering, here’s a rundown of project versions you’ll find in the Snow Leopard [...]

That is brilliant… except for all of the people that will never use any of it, and now have it sitting there taking up space… Is it so hard to go out and install these on your own?

  4. Jim Cook says:

@SeanJA: yes, for some. Lots of people that need and use these (myself included) could not care less about configuring and administrating a server.

  5. Jake says:

@SeanJA: Well, some of us don’t like the fact that the Snow Leopard install REMOVED some of these things (like Git) when we upgraded. Having things suddenly break after an upgrade isn’t much fun.

if you dont tlike the phone then why even comment. I mean the fact that poelpe are still buying boatloads of iPhone 3Gs goes to show that they dont care what you think. your original comment was ignorant. your words were implying that if someone had an 3g just update software and there was no difference other than speed.so your comment is false and deserved to be called out.if you dont like the new phone dont get it and keep you comments to yourself!!!!
